The Importance of Healthy Proteins

What is protein and why do we NEED it?!?! In the simplest words here you go!

Protein is important in many bodily functions, growth & maintenance: proteins form integral parts of most body structures ,skin, tendons, membranes, muscles, organs and bones.

Enzymes: Proteins facilitate chemical reactions. Enzymes are protein; if you’re not getting enough protein we can become enzyme deficient.

Hormones: Proteins regulate body processes.

Fluid balance: Proteins help to maintain volume and composition of bodily fluids.

pH Balance: Proteins help to maintain pH by acting as buffers.

Transportation: Lipids, vitamins, minerals and oxygen are transported around the body by proteins.

Antibodies: Proteins inactivate invading bacteria and viruses to protect the body.

Energy: Proteins can provide fuel for energy needs through gluconeogenesis.

Protein synthesis will be limited if a diet provides insufficient supplies of essential amino acids. The best way to ensure an adequate supply of amino acids is to eat foods containing complete proteins, or to consume a varied diet containing incomplete but complementary proteins.

Vegetarians can meet their protein needs by eating a variety of whole grains, legumes, seeds, nuts and vegetables. The body will source what it needs from these foods to build the proteins it needs.

Quality is most important. Always choose organic and support your local farmers. Call and ask if it is grass finished as well as grass fed. Prep is also important. Cook it low and slow to not destroy the nutrients. The hotter and the longer a food is cooked the less nutrients it will contain in the end.
